What is hemp?

Hemp, or Cannabis Sativa L., is grown on an industrial basis for many uses from food to cloth, paper, and fuel. Hemp seeds have long been a beneficial supplement for human consumption due to their balanced ratio of unsaturated fatty acids (including omega 3 and omega 6, which are ideal for human metabolism).

What is the difference between hemp vs craft hemp?

Since the 2018 Agricultural Improvement Act, the term "industrial hemp" has become the unsexy practical name for hemp grown by enormous commercial farms. Think of it like you would Budweiser or Natty Light, but in the hemp world.

On the other side of the coin is the small-plot hemp grower. This is someone who grows craft hemp as a point of passion, all while nurturing sustainable hemp plots to cross genetically-diverse strains to create enticing new hemp offerings. This is the craft hemp grower. Think of craft hemp like you would craft beer.

Industrial hemp is more commonly farmed for the fibers and seeds used in fabrics, building materials and the like. Craft hemp is the high-quality hemp used for human consumption.

Is hemp legal to grow in the United States?

YES! The 2018 Agricultural Improvement Act ruled that hemp would no longer be a controlled substance. Its growth is still regulated, and farmers must have a permit for it, but this change to the political landscape was a huge step in the right direction. For generations, this miracle plant had been stigmatized despite its rich benefits and versatile uses.

Does the war on weed affect hemp?

Unfortunately, in many ways, yes. Thanks to out-of-date perspectives and a LOT of misinformation, this war still thunders in the background. Our society continues to reel from 100 years of manipulation and lies aimed at oppressing targeted populations. With the passing of the Agricultural Improvement Act, however, hemp education has been on the rise, including undoing many of the knots of misinformation that used to cast doubts on its utility.

The Craft Hemp Club is as much about education and righting these wrongs as it is about sharing our craft hemp products. What was wrong about the war on weed and hemp is still wrong, and there continues to be a lot of bad information out there.

We built the Craft Hemp Club to give hemp enthusiasts and the hemp-curious a space to get real answers to their questions, and also to encourage people to connect and build more steam as we push forward into a new normal.

How can hemp be used as food?

Hemp seed is a highly nutritious food providing loads of protein and essential fatty oils. Some populations grow hemp specifically for its seed, which is often eaten in a form similar to oatmeal. The leaves can be consumed, too. Hemp seeds do not contain THC, and therefore do not give you a sensation of “high.”

The oil from hemp seed provides us with omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty oils. It’s also the only seed that contains these oils with almost no saturated fat. By limiting saturated fat, hemp oil also reduces the risk of heart disease.

How does hemp cloth compare to cotton?

The stalk of the hemp plant is used to create hemp cloth. The most fibrous part of the stem (the “bast”) can be woven into almost any kind of fabric and is known for being particularly durable. Compared to all other natural fibers available, hemp’s durable nature makes it the most suitable for several specific applications.

Hemp cloth is typically less soft than cotton, but it does not stretch, it’s stronger, and it’s longer-lasting. Hemp is also superior to cotton in an environmental sense because it’s an easier crop to grow and requires zero pesticides.

What other uses for hemp are there?

Hemp is also being used increasingly in construction materials, especially in the manufacturing of press boards and composite boards. This is where hemp stalks are glued together under pressure to produce aboard that is more elastic AND more durable than hardwood. The nature of hemp fibers makes it perfect for this kind of press-board technology.

Another new development in the use of hemp is in making plastics. The other part of the hemp stalk, the “hurd,” can be turned into plastics.

Hemp seed oil is also being used in many varnishes and lubricants.
